Patna: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism of the ruling NDA coalition in Bihar, calling the state the “Crime Capital of India” and accusing the government of failing to maintain law and order.

Posting on social media platform X, Gandhi alleged that fear and insecurity have gripped the state under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Bihar has become the ‘Crime Capital of India’ — fear in every street, restlessness in every house! The NDA regime is turning unemployed youth into murderers,” he wrote. “The CM is saving his chair, BJP ministers are earning commission. I am repeating again — this time the vote is not just to change the government, but to save Bihar.”

Gandhi’s comments follow his recent visit to Rajgir during a tour of Bihar, where he first publicly described the state as the “Crime Capital of India.” Addressing supporters in a 30-minute speech, he contrasted Bihar’s historical status as a centre of learning with its current challenges. “Bihar was the land of knowledge. Earlier, people from all over the world came to Nalanda. Today, people go to the whole world from here. The new definition of Bihar is the Crime Capital of India. Where have you reached from there?” he said.

The Congress leader also referred to the recent killing of businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna as evidence of deteriorating law and order. In an earlier post on social media, Gandhi said: “The open shooting of businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna has once again proved that the BJP and Nitish Kumar together have made Bihar the ‘crime capital of India’. Today, Bihar is living under the shadow of loot, shooting and murder. Crime has become the ‘new normal’ here — and the government has completely failed.”

He added, “Brothers and sisters of Bihar, this injustice cannot be tolerated any more. The government that cannot protect your children cannot take responsibility for your future either.”

The BJP and JD(U) have yet to formally respond to Gandhi’s latest remarks.
