Patna: Bihar has emerged as a national frontrunner in compensating victims and dependents of hit-and-run road accidents, with nearly Rs 100 crore disbursed so far to 4,935 beneficiaries under a central insurance scheme facilitated by the General Insurance Council (GIC), Mumbai.
Under the scheme, families of deceased victims receive Rs 2 lakh in compensation, while those seriously injured are granted Rs 50,000. The initiative aims to provide swift financial assistance to families grappling with tragedy and loss of livelihood after road accidents.
Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said the state government remains committed to ensuring timely justice and aid for accident victims. “Through this scheme, thousands of families in Bihar have received critical financial support during their darkest hour,” he said, adding that coordination is being done at the headquarters level with GIC and district administrations to speed up payouts.
Several districts have recorded payout rates of more than 80%, with Munger leading at 89%, followed by Jehanabad and Arwal (86% each), Motihari (82%) and Rohtas (81%). Other high-performing districts include Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Aurangabad, Saharsa, Jamui, Kaimur, Supaul, Nawada and Katihar — all of which have crossed the 70% mark.
Officials say the state’s proactive approach has not only accelerated the claims process but also created a model for other states to emulate.
