Patna: The Bihar government has recommended the direct appointment of cricketers Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) under the Bihar Outstanding Sportspersons Direct Appointment (Amendment) Rules, 2026.
The proposal has been sent to the home department by the general administration department, officials said. The selection committee has also approved the names of both players.
Recognition for sporting achievements
According to the government’s communication, Mukesh Kumar was part of the Indian cricket team that won the gold medal at the 19th Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China.
Akash Deep was also a member of the gold medal-winning squad. In addition, he represented India in the five-match Test series against England in 2025.
Officials said the appointments were made in recognition of their sporting achievements and contribution to the national team.
Service benefits and pay scale
Following the recommendation, both players have been allotted to the Bihar home department.
If appointed, they will receive the pay scale of Rs 9,300 to Rs 34,800 with a grade pay of Rs 5,400 under Level-9, along with other allowances as applicable under state government rules.
Appointment subject to verification
The government has stated that the appointments will remain provisional for six months until character and antecedent verification is completed.
Only after the verification process is cleared will the appointments be regularised.
Officials said the Bihar State Sports Authority has already verified the players’ sports certificates. However, the government said the appointments could be cancelled if any educational, residential or sports-related documents are later found to be incorrect or forged.
Five-year playing condition
Under the sports quota rules, both players will be required to sign a bond committing to remain active in competitive sports for five years from the date of joining.
Officials said failure to meet this condition could affect the confirmation of their services.
The rules also require sportspersons appointed under the quota to be permanent residents of Bihar, and their residential certificates will be examined as part of the verification process.
