Gopalganj: A violent clash broke out between two groups in Jalalpur village of Gopalganj’s Baikunthpur assembly constituency on Saturday, leaving three people — including a woman — injured. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over voting preferences during the Bihar Assembly elections.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the injured have been identified as Narad Yadav, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, and his wife, Reena Devi. All three were rushed to Sadar Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment under medical supervision.
BJP supporters alleged that RJD workers attacked them out of frustration over the party’s electoral performance. “We were beaten because we voted for the BJP candidate,” said Sanjay Yadav, one of the injured. “They asked why, as Yadavs, we didn’t vote for the lantern (RJD’s election symbol).”
Vijay Yadav, another BJP supporter, claimed he was targeted for posting a video supporting NDA candidate Mithilesh Tiwari. “The video was not caste-based, but once it went viral, RJD supporters began threatening me,” he said. “They even attacked my house when I tried to leave.”
He further stated that he had complained to local panchayat representatives earlier about intimidation but no action was taken.
Following the attack, the injured family members alleged that a group of six armed men entered their home, brandishing rods, swords, and hockey sticks, and assaulted them. Sanjay Yadav’s written complaint to the Baikunthpur police also claimed that valuables, including a Rs 90,000 mangalsutra and a mobile phone, were snatched during the assault.
Police confirmed that an FIR has been lodged based on the family’s statement. “A case has been registered, and raids are underway to apprehend the accused,” a police official said.
The incident has heightened political tension in the area, with BJP leaders accusing RJD supporters of “spreading fear” among voters. “RJD’s frustration is showing in such violent acts,” said the BJP’s district vice president.
The police have deployed additional forces in the village to prevent further unrest, while the victims remain under treatment at Sadar Hospital.
