New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a strict advisory to political parties, cautioning against the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to create synthetic or deepfake content targeting rival parties and candidates ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
With the announcement of the general election for the Bihar Legislative Assembly and by-elections in eight constituencies on November 6, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into force. The ECI emphasized that the MCC’s provisions extend to all online content, including posts on social media by political parties and candidates.

According to the commission, criticism of rival parties should be limited to their policies, programmes, past performance, and official work. Parties and candidates are urged to avoid personal attacks unrelated to public activities, as well as allegations based on unverified or distorted information.
The ECI specifically warned against the use of AI-generated content that could mislead voters or spread misinformation. It called on parties, candidates, and star campaigners to clearly label any synthetic material used in campaign advertisements or social media posts with terms such as “AI-Generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content.”
“The integrity of the electoral process must be upheld,” the ECI said, highlighting that strict monitoring of social media is underway to prevent the election atmosphere from being vitiated. The commission also reiterated that any violation of the MCC guidelines would be dealt with firmly.
