Patna: Bihar is set to overhaul its urban public transport network with plans to construct modern electric bus depots in six major cities at an estimated cost of Rs 62.83 crore. The state government says the project will improve passenger facilities, reduce pollution and strengthen long-term transport infrastructure.

The depots will be developed under the Prime Minister’s e-Bus Seva scheme in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur and Purnia. Announcing the decision, transport minister Shrawon Kumar said the initiative marks a decisive shift towards cleaner and more efficient public mobility across the state.

Unlike traditional bus yards, the proposed facilities are designed as integrated transport hubs. Officials said each depot will include administrative buildings, advanced maintenance workshops and mechanised washing ramps. Large charging stations capable of powering multiple electric buses simultaneously will form the core of the infrastructure, backed by dedicated power supply systems to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Passenger amenities will also be upgraded. Plans include public toilets, secure perimeter walls and dedicated feeding rooms for mothers. The government said these features are intended to create safer and more inclusive spaces for commuters and staff alike.

The project also addresses long-standing concerns over poor maintenance of state-run buses. By introducing structured servicing systems and better technical facilities, authorities aim to extend vehicle lifespan and improve reliability. Rest houses for drivers and conductors working long shifts are also part of the blueprint, in what officials describe as a step towards improving workforce welfare.

The government argues that the expansion of electric bus services will reduce diesel consumption and curb air and noise pollution, particularly in densely populated urban centres. With the new depots expected to support a growing fleet of e-buses, Bihar is positioning itself to transition gradually towards greener and more sustainable urban transport.
