Bihar Embarks on Rs 120 Crore Revamp of Ramayana Circuit to Spotlight Janaki’s Birthplace

Bihar launches a grand revival of Ramayana heritage sites, aiming to transform Janaki’s birthplace and other sacred spots into world-class spiritual destinations.

Patna: Bihar is set to launch an ambitious overhaul of sacred Ramayana-linked sites, led by the redevelopment of Punauradham — believed to be the birthplace of Mother Janaki (Sita) — in a bid to elevate the site to a stature comparable to Ayodhya’s Ram Janmabhoomi.

Design Associates Inc. has been appointed as the principal design consultant for this expansive cultural and religious revitalisation. The initial focus is on Punauradham in Sitamarhi district, where 17 acres of temple complex land and an additional 50 acres earmarked for expansion are to be transformed at a sanctioned cost of Rs 120.58 crore. Land acquisition is currently underway.

Reimagining Sacred Geography

The state government has approved parallel development efforts at several other Ramayana-linked sites. In Sitakund, East Champaran, Rs 6.55 crore has been sanctioned for beautification. Plans include the construction of a new entrance gate, boundary wall, toilet facilities, shops, and a cafeteria — all scheduled for completion within 18 months.

In Panthapakar, Sitamarhi — believed to be a stopover for Sita’s palanquin on its way to Ayodhya — significant upgrades are also in the pipeline. The site features a mystical pond said to never dry. Proposed renovations include temple expansion, ghat restoration, a new access path, thematic entry gates, lighting, and parking facilities. This project has a 24-month deadline and will be overseen by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation.

Madhubani’s Phoolhar Sthan — regarded as the setting for Ram and Sita’s first meeting — is to be developed into a tourist destination with modern amenities including laser fountains, a toilet block, ghat development, and dedicated parking. An initial budget of Rs 5 crore has been cleared.

In Darbhanga, the Ahilya Sthan temple complex will undergo a rejuvenation project with a sanctioned budget of Rs 3.74 crore. Planned works include a boundary wall, meditation pond, guesthouse, cafeteria, and pavilions. An additional 18.5 acres has been proposed for acquisition to support future infrastructure development. The proposed Hotel Janaki Vihar in Sitamarhi is another key element of this broad spiritual and tourism-focused initiative.

A Sacred Circuit Reborn

This effort is part of the Bihar government’s broader strategy to elevate the Ramayana Circuit’s profile on the global tourism map. It promises not only a spiritual revival but also economic potential through an influx of pilgrims and heritage travellers from across India and beyond.

As construction begins at these storied sites, the land of Sita prepares to retell its age-old tales with renewed splendour.
