Patna: The Bihar government has announced heightened security measures ahead of Muharram processions this year, with police supervision, videography, and strict enforcement of restrictions to maintain public order.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Pankaj Darad, stated on Friday that a total of 13,719 licensed Tazia processions will be permitted across the state. Unlicensed processions will be prohibited. To bolster security, the state will deploy 50 companies of the Bihar Special Auxiliary Police (B-SAP) and seven companies of central forces, in addition to 10,000 personnel including constables, home guards, and inspectors.
As part of the measures, the use of DJs during processions has been banned, and authorities have warned of strict action against any provocative slogans or tableau displays.
In Patna, local authorities issued a separate directive earlier this week mandating licences for all participating akharas (traditional martial arts groups). The order also bans elephants, horses, camels, DJs, and the display of swords in the procession.
To further ensure safety during the Akhada Pahalam — a key event in the Muharram observance — the administration will set up three temporary police stations near Dargah Karbala, Tiraha ki Masjid, and Patthar ki Masjid. These will be staffed by magistrates and senior police officers to monitor activities and respond swiftly to any unrest.
The decisions were formalised during a sub-divisional peace committee meeting attended by SDO Satyam Sahay, ASP Atulesh Jha, and DSP-2 Dr Gaurav Kumar, who underscored the need for vigilance at identified sensitive locations.
