Patna: Police have arrested Ejaz Qamar, the alleged main accused in a fake passport racket being investigated in Muzaffarpur, from Patna.
According to police, the racket allegedly involved creating fake Aadhaar cards and using Bihar addresses to facilitate Indian passports for Bangladeshi nationals. Investigators have also found alleged links with several states and are examining whether the network had international connections.
City SP Mohibullah Ansari announced Qamar’s arrest during a press conference on Sunday.
Police Probe Suspected London Connection
Police are also examining Qamar’s alleged international links.
According to the City SP, Qamar’s wife and some members of his family live in London. Investigators are therefore looking into his contacts and activities abroad to determine whether the alleged passport racket had any international dimension.
However, the nature and extent of any London connection are still part of the investigation.
Fake Aadhaar Allegedly Used for Passports
According to investigators, members of the alleged network prepared Aadhaar cards using fraudulent details and then used Bihar addresses to help Bangladeshi nationals obtain Indian passports.
The investigation began after police conducted a raid at Kanhai Communication in Motijheel, Muzaffarpur.
During the raid, police reportedly recovered a laptop, electronic equipment and other materials believed to be relevant to the investigation.
Four Accused Arrested So Far
The investigation has so far resulted in the arrest of four accused persons, including Qamar.
Police first arrested Sahil Kumar following the raid at Kanhai Communication. During interrogation, investigators allegedly obtained information that led to the arrest of Shiv Kumar Pandit from Saran district.
Another accused, identified as Sujit, was arrested on Saturday.
Qamar was subsequently arrested from Patna. Police said all four accused have been sent to judicial custody.
Ejaz Qamar Worked as Aadhaar Service Vendor
During questioning, Qamar reportedly told police that he had completed an MTech degree.
According to the police investigation, he left his job and later entered Aadhaar-related services, eventually working as a vendor.
Police allege that he used his position and access to Aadhaar-related services to establish the network involved in the suspected document fraud.
Operators Allegedly Supplied for Aadhaar Work
Police said Qamar used to take contracts related to Aadhaar updating work.
As part of this activity, he allegedly provided Aadhaar-related electronic equipment and operators. According to the investigation, operators were charged around Rs 30,000 per month.
Investigators are examining whether these legitimate-looking operations were used to facilitate the creation or manipulation of identity documents.
Network Reportedly Operated From Chandigarh
Police have also alleged that Qamar operated the network from Chandigarh.
Investigators have found contacts linked to several states and are now examining his previous records and the people associated with his alleged network in different parts of the country.
Police have contacted law enforcement agencies in other states as part of the investigation.
Investigation Underway to Identify Wider Network
Investigators are now trying to determine the scale of the alleged racket.
Key questions include how many people were involved, how many fake Aadhaar cards and passports were allegedly prepared, and whether other individuals helped arrange documents or facilitate passport applications.
Police are also examining Qamar’s previous activities, interstate contacts and financial and operational links to determine whether the network extended beyond Bihar.
The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests or disclosures may follow as police trace the alleged document-fraud network.
