Chennai/Patna: A family of three from Bihar was found dead in Chennai in a case that has shocked the city, police said. The victims—a man, his wife, and their young child—had come to the city in search of employment. The man’s body was discovered wrapped in a sack, while the bodies of his wife and child were later recovered from a nearby canal.
Police in Adyar said they had arrested five people from Bihar in connection with the killings. The incident came to light on January 26, when residents of Indira Nagar spotted a blood-stained sack and alerted authorities. Officers who arrived at the scene found the body of the man inside and sent it to Royapettah Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. CCTV footage suggested the sack had been dumped by individuals on a two-wheeler.
Investigators traced the vehicle using its registration number and discovered a mobile number in the deceased man’s trouser pocket. The number led them to a private security office in Adyar. Police said the man, identified as 24-year-old Gaurav Kumar, had visited the office with his wife seeking employment as security guards. The company reportedly had no vacancies at the time but promised to contact them if positions became available.
Further inquiries revealed that Kumar had later taken a job as a security guard at a polytechnic in Taramani, where he and his family were living. During questioning, seven people—including a close friend of Kumar—allegedly confessed to sexually assaulting Kumar’s wife and killing the child.
The child’s body was recovered from a canal in the Central Kailash area, while a search is ongoing for Kumar’s wife. Police have cordoned off a local garbage dumping yard as part of their investigation.
Adyar police have filed a case and confirmed the arrest of five men, identified as Sikandar (33), Narendra Kumar (45), Ravindranath Tagore (45), and Vikas (24), all residents of Bihar.
