Patna: Bihar is set to get its first full-fledged expressway, a project that officials believe could significantly improve regional connectivity and drive economic growth across the state.
The proposed Patna–Purnia Expressway is being developed as a major transport corridor linking central and eastern Bihar. Authorities have intensified preparations for the project and directed concerned departments to expedite pending formalities.
Modern Engineering Design Planned
According to MP Dr. Gopalji Thakur, the expressway will be built using modern engineering and construction technologies. The corridor is designed to provide a direct connection between National Highway 22 (NH-22) and National Highway 27 (NH-27).
Once operational, the route is expected to improve road connectivity between Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Saharsa and Purnia, reducing travel time and easing traffic movement across the region.
Economic Boost for North and East Bihar
Officials expect the project to generate substantial economic benefits for northern and eastern districts of Bihar.
Improved road infrastructure could facilitate faster movement of goods, lower transportation costs and encourage industrial investment. The corridor is also expected to strengthen trade links with neighbouring West Bengal, making freight transportation more efficient.
The enhanced connectivity may create new employment opportunities and support the development of logistics, warehousing and related sectors along the route.
Extensive Infrastructure Planned
Project plans include a range of major engineering structures to ensure seamless travel and local accessibility.
The proposed expressway will feature:
- 21 high-level bridges
- 140 minor bridges
- 11 railway overbridges (ROBs)
- 21 interchanges
- 322 underpasses
The large-scale infrastructure component makes the project one of the most significant road development initiatives currently planned in Bihar.
Completion Target Set for 2028
The state government has reportedly set a target to complete the expressway by the end of 2028.
If delivered on schedule, the Patna–Purnia Expressway could mark a major milestone in Bihar’s transportation network, improving mobility across the state while supporting long-term economic and industrial expansion.
