Patna: Construction of Bihar’s first access-controlled greenfield expressway has reached around 30% completion, with work progressing across all sections of the project, according to the latest official update. The 189-kilometre Amas-Darbhanga Expressway is expected to be completed by December 2026 and is designed to improve connectivity between North and South Bihar.

The expressway will pass through six districts—Gaya, Jehanabad, Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur and Darbhanga—providing a high-speed corridor intended to reduce travel times and improve the movement of people and goods across the state.

What the Latest Progress Report Shows

According to project authorities, construction is advancing simultaneously across the expressway’s four packages to keep the project on schedule.

Work currently under way includes earth filling, the construction of bridges and flyovers, and the laying of the main carriageway at multiple locations.

The latest progress report indicates that around 30% of the overall project has been completed.

How Construction Is Progressing Across the Four Packages

The expressway has been divided into four construction packages.

In the first package, covering an approximately 55-kilometre stretch from Amas towards Jehanabad, around 31% of the work has been completed.

The second package, spanning about 54 kilometres from Jehanabad towards Patna and Vaishali, has also reached approximately 31% completion, according to the project update.

Construction is comparatively less advanced in the third package, which covers roughly 47 kilometres between Vaishali and Samastipur. Officials said about 24% of the work has been completed in this section.

In the fourth package, extending from Samastipur to Darbhanga, construction of the roadway, bridges and other associated structures is continuing. While officials described progress as steady, they did not provide an updated completion percentage for this section.

Why the Expressway Matters

The Amas-Darbhanga Expressway is Bihar’s first access-controlled greenfield expressway, meaning it is being built on a new alignment rather than by widening an existing road. The project is expected to create a direct, high-speed link between southern and northern parts of the state.

According to officials, the corridor is intended to ease long-distance travel while improving connectivity between key urban centres and surrounding regions.

Expected Impact on Bihar’s Economy

State authorities say the expressway is expected to reduce travel times between several major cities after it becomes operational. They also expect the improved road network to support trade, industrial activity and the transportation of agricultural produce.

Better connectivity could also encourage investment and strengthen links between manufacturing centres, markets and logistics networks across the six districts through which the expressway will pass.

What’s Next

Construction agencies are continuing work simultaneously across multiple locations with the aim of completing the expressway by December 2026, according to officials. If the project remains on schedule, Bihar’s first greenfield expressway is expected to become a key addition to the state’s road infrastructure, improving connectivity between Gaya, Jehanabad, Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur and Darbhanga while supporting wider economic development.
