Patna: The Pataliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh, Patna, is set for a major infrastructure upgrade, with Bihar planning to develop its first synthetic athletics track designed to meet World Athletics Class-1 certification requirements.
The Sports Department and Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA) are jointly undertaking the renovation of the complex’s existing 400-metre athletics track and natural grass field to provide athletes with facilities aligned with international standards.
BSSA Director General Ravindran Sankaran said the new track is being developed in accordance with the technical specifications prescribed by World Athletics, with the objective of securing Class-1 certification.
Existing 400-Metre Track To Be Reconstructed
The existing eight-lane synthetic athletics track will undergo complete reconstruction. The work will include removing the old synthetic surface, milling the existing asphalt layer and preparing a new base.
A full-EPDM synthetic track system will subsequently be installed. The upgraded track is intended to provide athletes with modern training and competition facilities.
The project aims to bring the athletics infrastructure at the complex in line with international technical requirements.
Natural Grass Field To Get Improved Drainage
The renovation will also cover the natural grass field, with provisions to improve water drainage and irrigation.
A specialised network of drainage pipes will be installed beneath the playing surface to facilitate the quick removal of rainwater and reduce waterlogging.
The field will be developed with a sand-based root zone over a gravel drainage layer, followed by the installation of new Bermuda grass.
An automatic pop-up sprinkler system will also be introduced to ensure regular irrigation and maintain the playing surface.
Improved Training Facilities For Bihar Athletes
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to provide athletes with better facilities for training and preparing for national and international competitions.
The development could also reduce the need for Bihar-based athletes to travel to other states to access specialised athletics infrastructure.
With a modern synthetic track and an upgraded natural grass field, the Pataliputra Sports Complex is expected to play a greater role in supporting athletics training and developing sporting talent in Bihar.
