Patna: The Building Construction Department has constituted 10 flying squads to maintain high standards in newly constructed and renovated government buildings across Bihar. The move aims to strengthen monitoring of construction materials and ensure proper supervision of ongoing projects throughout the state.
Each flying squad consists of engineers at different levels, including a superintending engineer, an executive engineer and an assistant engineer. These teams will carry out inspections at construction sites, monitor the progress of work and check whether the materials used meet the required quality standards.
A dedicated squad has also been tasked with inspecting electrical installations in buildings. During inspections, the teams can collect samples from construction sites and send them to divisional-level or central laboratories for testing. To maintain transparency, superintending engineers in the squads will inspect projects outside their own divisions. The squads will function under the supervision of the Chief Engineer for Quality Monitoring.
Departmental secretary Kumar Ravi said the inspection teams have been formed to ensure that construction work meets high quality standards. He described the initiative as a key step toward building stronger, more durable and reliable public infrastructure. Inspection reports submitted by the squads will be reviewed after each visit, while samples collected will undergo testing in designated laboratories.
Officials added that the department periodically runs special drives to ensure quality control in construction work. The objective is to prevent any compromise in building standards while ensuring that public resources are used efficiently.
Under the department’s ongoing projects, materials such as bricks, concrete cube moulds used for strength testing, sand and gravel are being examined in central laboratories. More than 55 modern instruments are currently used in these facilities, allowing detailed testing of old structures, ongoing construction and upcoming infrastructure projects.
