Patna: The Bihar government has announced a new initiative to promote fish farming, offering free training and support to farmers and young entrepreneurs in the sector.
The Fisheries Department said it will cover the cost of accommodation, food and travel for trainees, who can apply through the Directorate of Fisheries’ online portal. Each training batch will include 30 participants, with eight batches planned for the 2025–26 financial year across district, state and out-of-state centres.
As part of the programme, participants will be taken to farms and hatcheries to observe large-scale operations and learn about seed production and common challenges in aquaculture. Three hatcheries have already been set up in the district to supply fish seed.
Officials said the scheme is designed to make fish farming a more viable form of self-employment, particularly for young people. A growing number of farmers in Banka district are already engaged in the practice, and the department said it is ready to provide further support to help expand the sector.
