Patna : Ghatora Wetland in Bihpur block of Bhagalpur district has entered the process for potential Ramsar site recognition, with the district administration directing officials to prepare and send a proposal at the earliest.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the District Wetland Conservation Committee, chaired by the Bhagalpur District Magistrate on Friday.
Officials have been asked to prepare the proposal with technical assistance from a GIS expert of the Bihar State Wetland Committee. The proposal will include relevant information and maps required for consideration at the competent level.
Focus On Wetland Conservation
The District Magistrate highlighted the role of wetlands in maintaining environmental balance, protecting biodiversity and supporting local ecosystems.
He directed departments to improve coordination and ensure time-bound action for wetland conservation and development.
Officials were also asked to prepare a proposal to ensure that at least one wetland in Bhagalpur district is notified under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017 at the earliest.
The concerned departments have been directed to work together and implement conservation measures through an effective action plan.
The administration is also accelerating the process of identifying suitable land for a biodiversity park in the district.
Natural Farming To Be Promoted
The administration has directed officials to promote natural farming in wetland areas and provide training to farmers.
The Agriculture Department has been asked to encourage farmers to adopt natural farming practices and take necessary supporting measures.
Circle officers have also been instructed to provide land records of wetland areas to help advance the conservation and notification process.
Officials from the revenue department, forest division, district planning office and other concerned departments attended the meeting.
What Is Ramsar Recognition?
A Ramsar site is a wetland recognised as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Such wetlands are recognised for their ecological importance, including their contribution to waterbird habitats, biodiversity and wider wetland ecosystems.
If Ghatora Wetland’s proposal is accepted through the relevant process, it could gain international recognition and receive greater attention for its long-term conservation and ecological management.
