Patna: The headquarters of Bihar Special Armed Police-1 (BMP-1), popularly known as the Gorkha Battalion, will be shifted to Naubatpur on the outskirts of Patna. The new headquarters will be built on a 30-acre plot in Charra village, where a modern campus with barracks, administrative offices and other facilities will be developed for the battalion.
Officials said the construction of the new campus will cost Rs 40.54 crore. The project will include permanent buildings, residential barracks for personnel, administrative infrastructure and a dedicated training centre within the same complex.
At present, the Gorkha Battalion headquarters operates from a campus near the cargo section of the airport, close to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s eastern regional centre. The land currently used by the battalion belongs to the Veterinary College.
According to Additional Director General (Modernisation) Sudhanshu Kumar, the government has also approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 49.78 crore in the last three months. These include the construction of four police station buildings, one SP residence-cum-office and two sub-division level offices. Construction work at these locations is expected to begin soon.
All the new police station buildings will be three storeys high and will be equipped with necessary furniture and facilities, officials said.
The Gorkha Battalion has a strength of around 1,300 personnel. The battalion was earlier based in Dhurwa in Ranchi. After the creation of Jharkhand in 2000, BMP-1 was shifted to Patna and temporarily accommodated on the Veterinary College campus. The battalion was formally established in Bihar in 2002.
The newly allotted 30-acre land for the headquarters is located about 6.5 km from Naubatpur and lies along the Bihta–Sarmera four-lane road. The upcoming campus will include barracks, a parade ground, administrative blocks and a training centre for personnel.
The battalion plays a key role in providing security to VVIPs, maintaining law and order in sensitive areas and supporting operations in Naxal-affected regions.
