Patna, September 25: Bihar government schools are set to introduce a monthly recognition system for Parents of the Month, Teachers of the Month and Students of the Month, aimed at encouraging greater participation in school activities and improving the learning environment.
The initiative will be implemented through schools, with separate criteria for selecting parents, teachers and students. The system focuses on parental involvement, teaching innovation and student participation rather than academic performance alone.
Parents To Be Recognised For Constructive Suggestions
Under the new arrangement, parents will be encouraged to attend Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) and discuss their children’s academic performance with teachers. They will also be invited to suggest ways to improve school facilities, academic practices and the overall functioning of the institution.
Teachers will record the suggestions made by parents, following which a group of teachers at the school will examine them. The parent whose suggestion is considered the most constructive will be selected as the Parent of the Month and honoured at the school.
The mechanism is intended to give parents a more active role in discussions about school functioning and their children’s education.
Teachers To Be Assessed On Teaching Innovation
The Teacher of the Month system will initially be introduced in Bihar’s model schools.
Teachers will be required to fill out a form covering different aspects of their work. The assessment will include whether they have introduced innovative teaching methods and whether the syllabus is progressing according to the planned schedule.
Student feedback will also form part of the assessment process. The school management will consider students’ views while reviewing the teacher’s classroom practices and engagement.
Attendance And Participation To Matter For Students
For the Student of the Month, schools will consider several indicators, including attendance.
Teachers will assess students on their classroom concentration, homework, participation in school activities and overall academic engagement. A separate form will be used to record these aspects before the monthly recognition is decided.
The system is intended to encourage students to remain engaged with their studies while also taking part in activities beyond regular classroom lessons.
Education Minister Explains The Objective
Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said the initiative has been planned to encourage parents to take a greater interest in their children’s schools, create a culture among teachers of trying new approaches to teaching and recognise active participation by students.
He said the recognition system is expected to contribute to improving the functioning of government schools by encouraging greater involvement from all three groups.
PTMs To Become An Important Part Of The System
The monthly recognition framework comes alongside efforts to strengthen parent-teacher interaction in government schools.
Parents will be encouraged to attend PTMs to understand their children’s performance and communicate directly with teachers. Feedback collected during these meetings can also help schools identify areas requiring improvement.
The new framework adds a formal recognition mechanism to this interaction, with schools expected to identify and honour parents, teachers and students who make notable contributions during the month.
Focus On Government School Engagement
The proposed system places emphasis on measurable participation and engagement rather than academic performance alone.
For students, attendance, homework, classroom engagement and participation in school activities will form part of the assessment. For teachers, classroom innovation and syllabus progress will be considered, while parents will be recognised for constructive suggestions and active engagement with the school.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the participation of parents, teachers and students in Bihar’s government schools, with monthly recognition being used as a way to encourage sustained involvement in school activities.
