Patna: The monsoon is set to intensify across Bihar, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy rainfall from Monday through Thursday across all 19 districts of the state’s north.
Eight districts — Kishanganj, Araria, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Vaishali, Chhapra, Samastipur and Khagaria — face the heaviest downpour, with authorities warning of waterlogging and partial flooding in low-lying areas. Winds of 30–40 km/h are also expected.
The warning follows widespread showers across Bihar on Sunday, with rainfall reported in 35 districts. Kishanganj bore the brunt, recording 299.6 mm at Taiyabpur and 221.6 mm at Thakurganj, while gusts reached 31 km/h in Madhepura. Only Jamui, Banka and Bhagalpur escaped the deluge.
Patna too saw a stormy Sunday, with 25 mm of rainfall easing the heat but submerging several neighbourhoods. Markets and roads in Jagdev Path, Punaichak, Shivpuri, Anta Ghat, Musallahpur Haat and Bazaar Samiti were among the worst affected by waterlogging. The maximum temperature in the capital dropped by 3.5°C to 31.8°C, though the minimum rose slightly to 27.1°C.
Patna municipal commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar said the city was on high alert, with all pumping stations and quick response teams pressed into service to manage floodwater. “The QRT is draining the water promptly,” he said.
With heavy rain set to continue through the week, civic and disaster management teams remain on standby as rivers in north Bihar are expected to swell further.
