Patna: Teenage cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi is set to be honoured by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar at a special ceremony in Patna, recognising his standout performance in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The felicitation will be held at the chief minister’s residence at 1 Anne Marg, where the 14-year-old arrived earlier with his parents.
Suryavanshi, who hails from Tajpur village in Samastipur district, has drawn national attention after playing a decisive role in India’s title triumph. His explosive innings of 175 runs not only propelled India to its sixth Under-19 World Cup victory but also brought rare global sporting recognition to Bihar’s grassroots cricketing talent.
The ceremony, scheduled for 4pm, is expected to be attended by deputy chief ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, as well as sports minister Shreyasi Singh. Singh said the honour symbolises not just an individual milestone but the aspirations of young athletes across the state striving to succeed despite limited resources.
The youngster’s defining innings came in Harare, where his aggressive batting punctuated by boundaries and sixes powered India to a formidable total of 411 runs. England fell well short in the chase, while Suryavanshi finished the tournament as its leading six-hitter, reinforcing his status as one of the most promising prospects in youth cricket.
Officials say the player’s success aligns with the state government’s broader push to strengthen sports infrastructure. Upgrades to Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna and the development of a high-performance sports complex in Rajgir are nearing completion, with authorities aiming to host international competitions and expand opportunities across Olympic disciplines.
Suryavanshi’s arrival in Patna sparked enthusiastic scenes at the airport, where fans gathered in large numbers to greet the emerging star. His rapid rise and understated demeanour have already made him a youth icon in Bihar, highlighting the transformative potential of grassroots sporting pathways in India.
