Patna: The Bihar transport department has taken an important step to fight noise pollution in cities and towns. From now on, every Sunday will be observed as a horn-free day. On this day, drivers are being asked to avoid unnecessary honking, while citizens are also being encouraged to support the initiative. The decision was announced in Patna on Thursday, with officials describing it as a people’s campaign that will only succeed if everyone participates.
Noise pollution has become a major problem in Bihar, especially in crowded urban areas where traffic is heavy. Experts say that unnecessary honking is one of the main reasons for rising noise levels. The constant sound of horns not only irritates people but also affects health. Doctors point out that too much exposure to loud noise can cause stress, disturbed sleep, high blood pressure and even long-term hearing problems. By introducing a horn-free Sunday, the government hopes to make people more aware of these dangers and encourage better driving habits.
The transport department explained that the idea is not just to give citizens one peaceful day in a week, but also to gradually change attitudes towards traffic discipline. If people can avoid blowing horns on Sundays, they may learn to use them less often on other days as well. Officials said that this could help create a calmer traffic culture, where drivers are more patient and respectful towards one another.
To make the campaign successful, awareness drives will be organised in schools, colleges and residential colonies. Posters and announcements are also planned in busy markets, bus stands and railway stations. The department has asked police and traffic officials to support the initiative by reminding drivers about the horn-free rule on Sundays. The idea is to encourage cooperation rather than punish people, at least in the beginning.
Citizens have reacted positively to the campaign. Many people said that even one quiet day would make a difference, especially for children, elderly people and patients who suffer the most due to constant noise. Environmental groups have also welcomed the move, saying it will reduce stress and promote healthier lifestyles. They added that if the initiative is successful, Bihar could become an example for other states to follow.
The government has appealed to residents to join hands and make horn-free Sundays a habit. Officials believe that small steps like this can lead to big changes in the long run. If the campaign works, Bihar’s roads could become less noisy, traffic could move more smoothly, and people could enjoy a calmer environment in their daily lives.
