Patna: Bihar’s industrial sector has overtaken agriculture in its contribution to the state economy, accounting for 23.57% of Gross State Value Added (GSVA) in 2024-25, compared with agriculture, forestry and fishing at 22.37%.
The services sector continued to dominate the economy, contributing 54.07% of the state’s GSVA, according to data released by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics under the Planning and Development Department.
The state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at current prices stood at Rs 9.92 lakh crore in 2024-25, according to the department’s August 2025 report.
Industrial Sector Gains Ground Over 13 Years
The figures indicate a gradual shift in Bihar’s economic structure towards non-agricultural activities.
In 2011-12, agriculture, forestry and fishing accounted for 25.7% of the state’s Gross Value Added, while the industrial sector contributed 18.8%. The services sector held the largest share at 55.5%.
By 2024-25, agriculture’s share had declined by 3.4 percentage points, while the industrial sector’s share had increased by 4.8 percentage points. The services sector’s share fell by 1.4 percentage points over the same period.

Industry Contributes Around Rs 2.23 Lakh Crore
The secondary sector, which includes construction, manufacturing and the supply of electricity and water, contributed approximately Rs 2.23 lakh crore to Bihar’s economy in 2024-25.
Agriculture, forestry and fishing contributed around Rs 2.15 lakh crore.
The figures show that the industrial sector’s contribution has grown relative to agriculture over the period, although the services sector continues to account for more than half of the state’s economic output.
Trade And Transport Lead Services Activities
Within the services sector, trade and repair activities contributed approximately Rs 1.28 lakh crore in 2024-25.
Transport, storage and communication accounted for around Rs 93,000 crore, while financial services contributed approximately Rs 43,000 crore.
The services sector also includes hotels, real estate, banking, public administration and other service activities.
Bihar’s Economic Structure Changes Over Time
In 2011-12, agriculture, forestry and fishing contributed approximately Rs 62,000 crore, while the industrial sector accounted for around Rs 45,000 crore. The services sector contributed about Rs 1.34 lakh crore.
The latest figures indicate that industry has expanded its relative share of Bihar’s economy, while agriculture’s share has declined. Services, however, remain the largest contributor to the state’s Gross Value Added.
