Bihar: “Inheritors of a Priceless Legacy” – President Murmu Addresses Mahatma Gandhi Central University Students at Inaugural Convocation
Motihari, 19th October 2023: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday graced the inaugural convocation of Mahatma Gandhi Central University at Motihari in East Champaran district.
President Murmu, addressing the gathered students, underscored the profound significance of their educational journey within an institution established in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, a pivotal figure in India’s struggle for independence and a global symbol of non-violence and moral rectitude.
“The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi,” President Murmu declared, “represents a priceless heritage, revered worldwide, and as students of this university, you are inheritors of a legacy that extols the virtues of simplicity and truth.”
She stressed the importance of understanding and internalizing the principles advocated by Gandhiji, emphasizing that the path of simplicity and truth was the route to genuine happiness, peace, and renown. She urged the students to embrace this path and to perpetually adhere to the teachings of Bapu, both in thought and action.
President Murmu articulated how Gandhi’s ideals fortified faith in non-violence, compassion, morality, and selfless service among the Indian populace. He also deeply intertwined Indian society, politics, and spirituality, becoming a global embodiment of India.
Recalling the historical significance of the Champaran Satyagraha, President Murmu highlighted its profound impact on Indian society. “During this momentous movement, the lines of caste divisions were momentarily erased as people cooked and dined together,” she said.
She stated that about 106 years ago, at the behest of Gandhi, people in Champaran adopted the path of social equality and unity and forced British rule to bow down.
“In the present day,” President Murmu continued, “the same path of social equality and unity, which was the cornerstone of the Champaran satyagraha, can guide us towards a contemporary and prosperous India.”
The event was attended by esteemed dignitaries, scholars, and the university’s students.
