Patna, 19th October 2023: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna witnessed a momentous occasion as President Draupadi Murmu, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar graced its first convocation ceremony on Thursday.

President Murmu addressed the convocation, expressing her delight to be present at the momentous event. She commended the significant representation of female doctoral graduates, stating, “Today, we are pleased that over 55 percent of the recipients of doctoral degrees are women. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to these accomplished young women.”

President Murmu underlined the significance of the medical profession, equating doctors with deities and emphasizing the role of service. She noted that those graduating from AIIMS carried a substantial responsibility to ensure the well-being of their fellow citizens. Reflecting on the growth of medical institutions and hospitals in recent years, she emphasized the positive impact on healthcare accessibility for the people.

Governor Arlekar echoed the importance of the event, deeming it an honor for all participants to be part of AIIMS Patna’s first convocation. He also highlighted the visit of President Murmu, considering it beneficial for all present.

Governor Arlekar praised CM Nitish for his contributions to Bihar and the numerous facilities he had introduced. He termed the day auspicious and emphasized the continuing nature of education. The governor urged graduates to make a lasting mark in society through their work, to be recognized for their contributions, and to uphold the prestige of an institute like AIIMS.

In his address, CM Nitish extended warm congratulations to President Murmu and offered a hearty welcome to her on her visit to the ancient land of Pataliputra, now known as Patna. He celebrated and commended the students who received their degrees and gold medals on this special day.

Recalling the establishment of AIIMS Patna, the Chief Minister explained that the institute’s construction was initially approved in 2003 during his tenure as a minister in the government of the former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He detailed the subsequent developments and his continued involvement in the project, highlighting his dedication to its rapid progress.

AIIMS Patna officially began its journey in 2013, providing advanced healthcare with 960 beds and becoming a vital source of medical expertise. CM Nitish noted the institution’s outstanding contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic, delivering exceptional healthcare services to Bihar residents.

In further support of AIIMS Patna, the state government facilitated the allocation of 27 acres of land and provided Rs 330 crore for expansion. He also announced the imminent completion of a Dharamshala, which would offer accommodations for the families of patients receiving care at the institute.

The Chief Minister expressed his commitment to addressing any additional requirements for AIIMS Patna and congratulated the graduates on their well-deserved achievements. He described President Murmu’s presence at the event as a source of immense pleasure and extended his congratulations once more.

The convocation featured the presentation of medals and certificates to deserving students by the President. The event concluded with honors bestowed upon the President, Governor, and Chief Minister by AIIMS Chairman Prof. (Dr.) Subrata Sinha, who presented them with symbols and garments.

The ceremony also witnessed addresses by Dr. Bharti Praveen Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, AIIMS Chairman Prof. (Dr.) Subrata Sinha, and Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Gopal Krishna Pal.

Several prominent figures, including MP Ramkripal Yadav, MP Chedi Paswan, MLA Gopal Ravidas, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Deepak Kumar, Chief Secretary Aamir Subhani, and Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department Pratyaya Amrit, along with other distinguished guests, graced the occasion alongside students and staff.
