Patna: The Bihar government has announced a new initiative aimed at revitalising the traditional jaggery industry, providing a significant opportunity for farmers and investors in the state. As part of the “Bihar State Jaggery Industry Promotion Program (FY 2025-26)”, applications are now open online until August 25.

The scheme, run by the state’s Sugarcane Industry Department, seeks to promote the establishment and modernisation of jaggery production units across Bihar. It offers financial grants covering up to 50% of the capital cost for new jaggery units, with support levels varying according to the daily crushing capacity. Grants range from Rs 6 lakh for units processing 5–20 tonnes per day, up to Rs 1 crore for units exceeding 60 tonnes daily.

Alongside financial aid, technical assistance will be provided to selected investors to ensure the sector’s modernisation and competitiveness. The programme aims to foster self-employment, empower rural communities, and strengthen local industries, positioning jaggery production as a pillar of Bihar’s rural economy.

Traditionally widespread in Bihar’s rural areas, the jaggery industry has faced challenges due to a lack of technical advancements. The government’s new scheme intends to organise and upgrade the sector, promoting it as a driver of economic growth and self-reliance within the state.

Interested applicants can submit their proposals via the official portal (ccs.bihar.gov.in) by August 25. The government has also encouraged investors to reach out to their district sugarcane officers for further information.

Additionally, the programme includes provisions to train farmers, with plans to conduct four training sessions in 2025-26 for groups of 50 farmers each, further enhancing skills and knowledge within the sector.
