BHAGALPUR – Rajeev Ranjan, a first-year MBBS student of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Bhagalpur, residing in the Old Intern hostel opposite Mayaganj Hospital, allegedly took his own life on Saturday evening.
The news of the student’s demise sparked outrage among medical students, leading to protests and slogans against the medical administration. Concurrently, a doctors’ program within the medical college campus was halted.
After 45 minutes of intense protest and persuasion, the agitated students returned to Mayaganj hospital from the Medical College, expressing their grievances through continued slogans.
At 5:30 pm, Ishwar, a friend of Ranjan, reached the hostel. Despite multiple calls, there was no response from Ranjan, prompting Ishwar to seek assistance from other friends.
Upon breaking the door, they discovered Ranjan hanging from the fan. The incident was promptly reported to the Barari police and hospital administration. Upon receiving the information, Barari police conducted an initial investigation into the matter.
The hospital superintendent also arrived at the scene, gathering information about the tragic incident. The police restricted access to the sealed room, emphasizing that further proceedings would be determined after a forensic investigation.
Amidst the grieving students, allegations were leveled against the medical college administration. The protesting students claimed that Ranjan was barred from taking an exam, exacerbating his stress, and ultimately leading to his decision to end his life.
Expressing solidarity with the deceased student, senior doctors in the program urged the students to remain calm, acknowledging the sorrowful loss of Ranjan. They iterated that the blame lay with the medical college administration, questioning the measures taken to support Ranjan’s academic improvement.
