Patna: Bihar has reported a sharp rise in the seizure of medical drugs allegedly being misused as intoxicants, alongside conventional narcotics such as cannabis, heroin and other prohibited substances.

Police and prohibition authorities have intensified their action against the illegal drug trade, with large quantities of capsules, injections and codeine-based cough syrups seized across the state.

According to data from the Prohibition and State Narcotics Control Bureau cited in the report, the number of drug-related cases registered in Bihar has also increased during 2026.

More Drug Cases Registered Than In Entire Previous Year

In 2025, authorities registered 2,583 cases related to narcotics and arrested 3,562 accused persons.

By July 2026, however, 2,677 cases had already been registered, exceeding the total number recorded during the previous year.

Authorities had also arrested 3,762 accused persons by July 2026, according to the data.

The figures indicate that enforcement agencies have continued their campaign against narcotics and the alleged illegal distribution of drugs used for intoxication.

Capsule Seizures Rise To Over 10.71 Lakh

The seizure of capsules allegedly used for intoxication has increased significantly over the past three years.

Authorities seized 90,150 capsules in 2024, according to the bureau’s report.

The figure rose to 6.43 lakh capsules in 2025. By July 2026, authorities had seized more than 10.71 lakh capsules.

The seizure of injections also increased. Authorities recovered 63,208 injections in 2024, compared with nearly four lakh injections by July 2026, the report said.

Codeine-Based Syrup Seizures Also Increase

Seizures of codeine-based cough syrups have also risen, according to the reported figures.

Authorities recovered around 1.17 lakh bottles in 2024, while the number increased to 3.41 lakh bottles in 2025.

By July 2026, about 3.89 lakh bottles had already been seized.

The data also showed continued seizures of cannabis and other narcotic substances across the state.

Heroin Seizures Cross 100kg By July

Bihar recorded substantial seizures of conventional narcotics as well.

In 2023, authorities recovered 9,755kg of cannabis, 109kg of charas and 24.6kg of heroin.

By 2025, cannabis seizures had increased to 31,915kg, while 378kg of charas and 65kg of heroin were recovered.

In the first seven months of 2026, authorities seized 30,234kg of cannabis, 67.52kg of charas and 101kg of heroin, according to the report.

Authorities Identify Drug Hotspots

Police have identified several districts and regions for closer monitoring as part of efforts to curb drug trafficking.

Districts along the Nepal border, along with Patna, Gaya and Vaishali, are among the areas receiving particular attention.

Available seizure trends show higher heroin recoveries in Vaishali and higher cannabis seizures in Gaya, while parts of the Seemanchal region have reported relatively higher seizures of codeine-based syrups.

Authorities are also compiling district-wise data to identify areas where particular types of narcotics are more frequently recovered.

Action Against Trafficking Networks

Police headquarters has directed districts to take action against known drug traffickers and identify new individuals allegedly involved in trafficking and distribution.

According to the report, authorities have identified around five dozen suspected drug traffickers at the state level for further action.

The enforcement drive is aimed at disrupting illegal supply networks and strengthening action against drug trafficking across Bihar.
