Patna: Bihar has recorded a significant increase in milk production, with daily output reaching approximately 26 lakh litres, according to the Department of Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources.
The department said the state was producing around 22 lakh litres of milk per day last year. The latest figures indicate an increase of nearly 4 lakh litres daily within a year, reflecting stronger performance in the dairy sector.
Favourable Conditions Boost Output
Officials attributed the rise in production to the improved availability of green fodder, favourable weather conditions and the absence of major infectious diseases among dairy animals.
Milk production generally declines during the summer months because of heat stress on livestock. However, continuous rainfall and relatively pleasant weather conditions this year helped maintain animal health and productivity.
The department said the lack of significant disease outbreaks among cows and buffaloes also prevented losses for livestock farmers, allowing milk production to remain stable and increase.
Livestock Numbers Show Slight Decline
Despite the increase in milk output, preliminary data indicates a slight reduction in the state’s livestock population.
According to the 20th Livestock Census conducted in 2019, Bihar had around 1.53 crore cows and 77 lakh buffaloes. Preliminary figures collected in March 2025 suggest that the cow population has declined to about 1.48 crore.
Officials also reported a decrease in the buffalo population, although detailed figures are yet to be released.
The state’s poultry population is estimated to exceed 2.25 crore. However, the final report of the 2025 Livestock Census has not yet been published.
Better Management Practices Cited
The department said improved livestock management practices, balanced nutrition and greater access to green fodder have helped offset the impact of declining animal numbers.
Officials believe these factors have increased productivity per animal, contributing to higher overall milk production across the state.
The rise in output is expected to strengthen Bihar’s dairy sector and support higher incomes for livestock farmers, while improving the availability of milk and dairy products in the market.
