Patna: The Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) has been honoured with a SKOCH Award for its Pink Bus Initiative, a programme designed to improve safety, accessibility and inclusivity in public transportation for women across the state.
The award was presented during the 108th SKOCH Summit, where policymakers, administrators and industry leaders gathered to discuss governance reforms and regulatory frameworks aimed at advancing the vision of a developed India.
BSRTC Administrator Atul Kumar Verma represented the corporation at the summit and received the award on behalf of the organisation.
Focus On Safer Public Transport For Women
The Pink Bus Initiative was launched to create a more secure and women-friendly public transport environment in Bihar.
According to BSRTC, the programme has already deployed more than 100 women conductors and is working towards increasing the recruitment, training and skilling of women drivers.
Officials said the initiative seeks not only to improve commuter safety but also to expand employment opportunities for women in the transport sector, an area traditionally dominated by men.
Safety Features Introduced
The specially designated Pink Buses have been equipped with a range of features intended to enhance passenger safety and convenience.
These include CCTV surveillance systems, panic buttons, sanitary vending machines and other facilities designed specifically for women commuters.
BSRTC said the measures are aimed at ensuring a safer and more dignified travel experience while encouraging greater use of public transport by women.
Recognition For Inclusive Mobility
Receiving the award, Verma thanked the SKOCH Group and dedicated the recognition to the BSRTC workforce.
He said the award reflected the efforts of the corporation’s employees in introducing innovative and inclusive transport solutions.
Verma also reiterated BSRTC’s commitment to strengthening safe mobility, women’s empowerment and accessible public transportation services across Bihar.
Supporting Gender Equity Through Transport
The recognition highlights the growing emphasis on gender-sensitive public infrastructure and the role of transportation in expanding economic opportunities for women.
Officials said initiatives such as the Pink Bus programme contribute not only to safer travel but also to broader goals of gender equity, workforce participation and sustainable urban mobility.
The award places BSRTC among public sector organisations being recognised for using governance and service delivery reforms to address social challenges while improving public services.
