Patna: The Bihar government has announced plans to establish model secondary schools in all 534 blocks across the state from the 2026–27 academic session, in a move aimed at strengthening access to quality education and competitive exam preparation in rural and semi-urban areas.
Under the initiative, students will begin structured coaching for national-level entrance examinations such as JEE, NEET and various Olympiads from class 9. The scheme is being rolled out under the state’s Saat Nischay-3 programme, with the education department issuing guidelines to district education officers to expedite preparations and ensure schools are ready to function from the new session.
Applications for the entrance examination have already been completed. The selection test will be conducted at the district level by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). Admissions will be granted on the basis of merit lists, while category-wise reservation will be implemented in accordance with existing state government norms.
Officials said the model schools will employ experienced teachers and subject experts to guide students through a structured curriculum aligned with competitive examinations. Regular test series, performance tracking and academic analysis will form part of the learning process to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.
The infrastructure blueprint includes smart classrooms, modern libraries and fully equipped science laboratories. Schools will also organise doubt-clearing sessions to provide targeted academic support. Alongside academic instruction, students will have access to vocational guidance and structured career counselling to help them make informed decisions about higher education and employment pathways.
In a significant policy shift, the government has scrapped the annual income ceiling for applicants. Students seeking admission will no longer be required to submit income certificates, broadening access to the programme. However, the state’s reservation framework will continue to apply during the admission process.
