Motihari/Patna: A police operation in Muzaffarpur has taken a startling turn after four Motihari constables were arrested for allegedly stealing Rs 3 lakh from cash seized during a raid. The incident emerged when Areraj police, acting on a case linked to a gold fraud, conducted a search in Madhopur Hazari village under Sahebganj police station.
According to officials, Rs 15 lakh was recovered during the raid, part of a Rs 19 lakh sum looted from a businessman. However, discrepancies soon surfaced. Areraj DSP Ravi Kumar noticed that Rs 3 lakh was missing from the seized amount and questioned the constables. They initially denied any wrongdoing but later confessed. Acting on their disclosure, officers recovered the missing cash from beneath the mat of a police vehicle. All four constables were subsequently taken into custody.
Govindganj station house officer Raju Kumar Mishra has filed a named FIR against the constables at Sahebganj police station, and they have since been sent to jail. During the same operation, police also arrested Surendra Das of Kanchhedwa in Harsiddhi and Neha Devi of Madhopur Hazari.
The raid was linked to a fraud case in which Santosh Das allegedly deceived a businessman by offering to sell gold worth Rs 1 crore for Rs 19 lakh. The businessman, Mohanji Gupta from Jaunpur, travelled with associates to Areraj Someshwar Nath Mahadev temple and was later taken to Radhiya village. There, a group of seven to eight people allegedly snatched Rs 19 lakh at the home of Amresh Pandey.
As the robbers attempted to flee, Gupta’s associates caught Santosh and handed him over to the police. Following the complaint, Govindganj police raided Sahebganj and recovered Rs 15 lakh on November 20.
The arrests of the four constables have raised questions about internal accountability and oversight within the force, prompting calls for stricter supervision during seizures and raid operations.
