Patna: In the wake of the Bihar Assembly elections, Purnia MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, has come under scrutiny for distributing cash assistance in violation of the state’s election code of conduct.
Yadav handed out Rs 4,000 each to victims of riverbank erosion during a meeting in Ganiyari village, Sahdei block, Vaishali district. Speaking to the media, he said: “There is a code of conduct, but it makes a difference to me. People have become homeless, and there is no one to look after them. With the money I gave them, these people can at least buy a tarpaulin to survive for a few days.”
Following the incident, authorities registered a first information report (FIR) on the application of Sahdei Buzurg Circle Officer Anuradha Singh, under the direction of Mahnar SDO Neeraj Kumar Sinha. The complaint cites the distribution of cash during the election period as a breach of the code of conduct.
Yadav defended his actions, insisting that his motive was humanitarian rather than political. “When people are being displaced from their homes, it is the duty of a public representative to stand with them,” he said.
Residents affected by the erosion welcomed the MP’s support, saying the assistance provided much-needed relief during an extremely difficult time.
