Patna: Mutual fund investing is spreading rapidly across Bihar, with the number of investors rising sharply in recent years and growing interest emerging in smaller cities and semi-urban areas.

The number of mutual fund investors in the state has increased from around 7 lakh in 2018-19 to 1.17 crore, reflecting a dramatic expansion in participation.

But the surge in investor numbers has not translated into a comparable rise in investment per person. As of June 2026, Bihar’s total assets under management (AUM) stood at Rs84,795 crore, accounting for about 1% of India’s total mutual fund AUM of Rs82.22 lakh crore.

From Patna to smaller towns

Mutual fund investment is no longer concentrated in Patna. Interest has been growing in cities including Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Begusarai and Purnia.

The expansion of brokerage services and online investment platforms has made it easier for people in smaller towns to access mutual funds without relying entirely on traditional financial intermediaries.

The growth of systematic investment plans (SIPs) has also helped bring smaller investors into the market. Many fund houses allow investors to start SIPs with relatively small amounts, making regular investing accessible to people with modest incomes.

Another factor behind the trend was the Covid-19 pandemic. Corporate employees who returned to Bihar during the lockdown period introduced investment options such as mutual funds to family members and people in their communities, helping spread awareness of market-linked investments.

Equity dominates Bihar’s mutual fund portfolio

Equity funds account for 72% of Bihar’s mutual fund investments, making them the dominant category.

Hybrid funds account for 14%, debt and income funds for 3%, and solution-oriented funds for 5%.

The strong preference for equity reflects investors’ search for higher returns, but it also exposes them to greater market risk.

A Patna- based mutual firm broket said investors need patience and a long-term approach when entering the market.

The stock market can be volatile, he said, urging new investors to understand the risks before investing. Caution and patience are particularly important for those investing in equity-oriented products.

Bihar’s per capita investment remains low

The sharp rise in investor numbers masks a major gap in the size of investments.

Bihar’s per capita AUM stands at Rs6,751, placing it near the bottom of the national ranking.

The contrast with leading regions is stark. Per capita AUM is Rs5,66,829 in New Delhi, Rs2,71,795 in Goa and Rs2,35,662 in Maharashtra.

Other states and Union territories with high per capita AUM include Chandigarh at Rs2,05,855, Karnataka at Rs86,029, Gujarat at Rs77,980, Telangana at Rs54,423 and Tamil Nadu at Rs47,452.

At the other end of the table, Lakshadweep has per capita AUM of Rs2,752, followed by Manipur at Rs5,460, Ladakh at Rs5,724 and Bihar at Rs6,751.

Bihar still accounts for only 1% of India’s AUM

Maharashtra remains the country’s largest contributor to mutual fund AUM, accounting for 37% of the total, followed by New Delhi at 15%.

Karnataka and Gujarat each account for 7%, while West Bengal contributes 5%.

Bihar’s share is approximately 1%, with the remaining 28% distributed among other states and Union territories.

The figures point to a striking contradiction: Bihar has witnessed an enormous expansion in the number of people entering the mutual fund market, but the average amount invested remains low.

For the state’s emerging investor class, the next phase may therefore be less about bringing more people into mutual funds and more about increasing financial awareness, encouraging disciplined long-term investing and enabling households to build larger financial assets over time.
