Patna: Students in Bihar aspiring to study abroad are set to benefit from the implementation of the National Overseas Scholarship Scheme in the state, offering financial support to those from economically weaker sections and SC/ST communities.
Under the scheme, around 125 students will be selected each year, including 30 seats reserved for female candidates. Selected students will be able to pursue postgraduate and doctoral programmes at leading global universities.
Full financial support for overseas education
The scheme provides comprehensive financial assistance, covering tuition fees, living expenses, visa costs, medical insurance and airfare. Officials said the initiative aims to remove financial barriers that often prevent talented students from accessing international education.
Eligibility criteria and application process
To qualify, applicants must have a family income below Rs 8 lakh annually and be under 35 years of age. Candidates must also secure admission to a recognised foreign university ranked within the top 500 globally, as per QS rankings.
Applicants are required to submit documents including Aadhaar details, academic mark sheets and an income certificate. A maximum of two students from a family can avail the scheme, and those who have previously received government-funded overseas scholarships are not eligible.
Applications can be submitted through the official portal.
Conditions for beneficiaries
Under the terms of the scheme, selected students must return to India within 30 days of completing their studies and remain in the country for at least one year. Non-compliance may result in repayment of the scholarship amount with interest.
Officials said the rollout of the scheme in Bihar is expected to widen access to global education opportunities while encouraging students to contribute to the country after completing their studies.
