Patna: Bihar Police have arrested a police constable for allegedly creating and circulating a fake transfer letter involving IPS officers, officials said on Friday.
The forged document, which was shared widely on social media and other digital platforms, appeared to contain official postings and transfer details of several IPS officers. Authorities later confirmed that the letter was fabricated.
Fake transfer list triggered inquiry
According to officials, the purported transfer list initially appeared authentic and quickly gained circulation online, prompting concern within the police headquarters.
After verification, the headquarters declared the document fake and initiated an investigation into its origin and circulation.
Police personnel found involved
During the inquiry, investigators identified the involvement of a serving police personnel in the preparation and dissemination of the forged letter.
The accused was taken into custody for questioning and later arrested. Police officials said efforts are underway to identify any other individuals linked to the case.
FIR registered, further probe underway
Additional Director General (Law and Order) Sudhanshu Kumar said an FIR had been registered immediately after the matter came to light.
“The accused, who is a Bihar Police constable, has been arrested. Further legal action is being taken,” Kumar said.
He added that police headquarters is closely monitoring activities across districts and has instructed officials to remain vigilant and respond promptly to such incidents.
Authorities warn against misinformation
Police officials said strict action would be taken against those involved in spreading rumours, creating forged documents or attempting to disrupt public order.
The police also urged citizens to verify the authenticity of viral documents and messages before sharing them.
Probe examining wider links
Investigators are now examining the motive behind the forged transfer order and whether any larger network was involved in its circulation.
Police headquarters said the investigation is continuing under relevant legal provisions.
