Saran/Patna: A police and administrative team carrying out an anti-encroachment operation in Saran district was allegedly attacked by villagers who pelted stones at officials, damaging a government vehicle, authorities said on Friday.
The incident took place in Bishunpura village under Jalalpur block, where officials had arrived to remove alleged encroachments from government land linked to a pre-existing gram kachahari building.
Circle officer escapes unhurt
According to officials, Circle Officer Abhinash Kumar and his private driver, identified as Man Kumar of Kumna village, narrowly escaped injury during the incident. However, the official vehicle used by the circle officer sustained damage in the stone-pelting.
Authorities said no serious injuries were reported.
Notices had been issued earlier
Administrative officials stated that complaints regarding encroachment on government land had been received repeatedly in recent months. The administration had reportedly issued notices on three separate occasions asking occupants to vacate the land.
After the alleged encroachment remained in place despite the notices, the circle officer and his team visited the site to begin removal proceedings.
Villagers objected to land measurement
Officials said tensions escalated after some villagers objected to the anti-encroachment action, claiming the land in question was privately owned. Residents also alleged that the land measurement conducted by the administration was incorrect.
The protest soon turned violent, with several people allegedly throwing stones at the administrative team. Authorities said women were also among those involved in the incident.
FIRs registered, investigation underway
Police have registered FIRs against those accused of participating in the attack and said efforts are underway to identify all individuals involved.
Officials said further legal action would be taken in accordance with the law. The administration described the matter as serious and reiterated that drives against illegal occupation of government land are continuing in different parts of the state.
