Patna: The Bihar Home Department has issued a major notification initiating the process to fill 20,937 posts in the state police force through direct recruitment and departmental promotions.
The move comes as part of efforts by the government led by Samrat Chaudhary to modernise and expand policing infrastructure in line with Bihar’s growing population and increasing operational requirements.
According to the notification:
- 10,468 posts will be filled through direct recruitment
- 10,469 posts will be filled through departmental promotions
Officials said the decision is expected to create new employment opportunities while also opening promotion avenues for existing police personnel.
Cabinet Decision Implemented
The Home Department stated that the appointments were approved during the chief minister’s second cabinet meeting.
The department has already sent the notification to:
- the Accountant General
- the Finance Department
for further administrative processing.
Earlier ERSS Expansion Created Thousands Of Posts
According to the official communication, the Home Department had earlier created 19,288 posts in 2023 under the second phase of the Emergency Response Support System project.
These included:
- 259 Police Inspector posts
- 1,829 Police Sub-Inspector posts
- 1,218 Assistant Sub-Inspector posts
- 694 Driver Havildar posts
- 2,353 Driver Constable posts
- 2,943 Havildar posts
- 9,992 Constable posts
The posts were divided across various pay levels and categories for both recruitment and promotion.
Government Creates 48,447 Additional Posts
The Home Department has also approved the creation of 48,447 additional posts to strengthen Bihar Police operations.
These include:
- 20,937 Police Sub-Inspector and equivalent posts
- 22,010 Constable and equivalent posts
- 5,500 Driver Constable and equivalent posts
Officials said the expansion was aimed at improving policing capacity and maintaining force strength proportional to population growth.
Half Of SI-Level Posts Reserved For Promotion
Under the latest proposal, the Bihar government has approved reserving 50% of Police Sub-Inspector and equivalent posts for departmental promotion.
The decision is expected to significantly increase career advancement opportunities for lower-ranking police personnel.
The Home Department clarified that when the 48,447 posts were initially created, provisions for promotions had not been included.
The new approval specifically earmarks half of the Sub-Inspector-level posts for promotion, allowing serving personnel to move up through the ranks.
