Patna : Travellers in Bihar who feel unsafe while travelling alone or at night may soon be able to seek police assistance through a new feature on the 112 India mobile app.
The Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), which operates Dial 112, is testing a ‘Track Me’ facility that will allow users to register their journey details through the app. Police personnel will then monitor the journey and contact the traveller at regular intervals to check their safety.
According to Prabhat Khabar, the feature is being prepared for launch before Diwali 2026. The trial has begun, although the report does not specify an official launch date.
How The ‘Track Me’ Feature Will Work
To use the facility, travellers will need to enter their journey details through the 112 India app. The information will include:
- Starting point and destination
- Mode of transport
- Expected travel time
Based on these details, Dial 112 personnel will receive information about the traveller’s route. Emergency response vehicles deployed along the route will also be alerted in advance so that assistance can be coordinated if required.
The system is designed to maintain contact with travellers throughout their journey until they report reaching their destination safely.
Police To Call Travellers Every 15 Minutes
Under the proposed arrangement, Dial 112 personnel will call the traveller every 15 minutes to check whether they are safe.
If the traveller does not answer and police are unable to establish contact for a period of time, the response team will use the available mobile location information to alert the nearest Dial 112 vehicle.
Police personnel in that vehicle may then reach the traveller’s reported location to check the situation and provide assistance if necessary.
The purpose is to help emergency teams identify potential safety concerns early and respond when a traveller cannot be contacted.
Women Currently Receive An Offline Safety Service
A similar safe-travel facility is already available to women through an offline process.
Under the existing arrangement, a woman travelling alone can call Dial 112 and inform the police of her starting point, destination, mode of transport and expected journey time.
Police personnel use these details to maintain contact and monitor the journey. The proposed app-based feature is expected to make the process more accessible by allowing users to submit their travel information digitally.
Emergency Vehicles To Be Alerted Along The Route
The planned system will also involve Dial 112 response vehicles positioned along the traveller’s route. These teams will receive advance information to help them respond more quickly if an emergency is reported or contact with the traveller is lost.
The effectiveness of the arrangement will depend on the availability of accurate journey details, communication with the traveller and coordination between emergency response teams.
A New Option For Safer Travel
The proposed ‘Track Me’ feature is intended to provide an additional safety option for people travelling alone, particularly during late hours or on unfamiliar routes.
By combining scheduled safety calls, journey information and coordination with nearby emergency vehicles, Bihar Police aims to improve its ability to respond when travellers may need help.
Travellers should check the official 112 India app and announcements from Bihar Police for confirmation of the feature’s launch and instructions on how to use it.
