Patna: From August 1, people in Bihar using smart prepaid electricity meters will not have to recharge their meters for the first 125 units they use every month. This decision will help about 60 lakh families who have prepaid meters installed in their homes.
However, officials said that if someone uses more than 125 units, they will have to recharge for the extra units. For example, if a person uses 200 units in a month, the first 125 units will be free, and they will only need to pay for the remaining 75 units at the normal subsidised rates. Also, if a person has pending dues on their meter, they will still have to clear those dues, which are deducted daily.
This scheme was announced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on July 17, and the cabinet approved it on July 18. The free units for July will show as a balance in the August bill. Officials said both North and South Bihar Power Distribution companies will inform users about their credited amounts through SMS.
The energy department confirmed that all domestic power consumers will get this benefit. Even after using 125 units, the usual subsidised rates will apply for the remaining units under the state’s electricity help scheme.
