Patna: In a significant step aimed at easing passenger congestion, Indian Railways has begun installing Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) at railway stations across Bihar. The initiative, designed to reduce queues and waiting times, is currently being rolled out at stations with the highest footfall, with approximately 44% of stations already equipped with the machines.
According to officials, the goal is to ensure that all railway stations in the state are equipped with ATVMs by March 2026. Once fully implemented, the facility is expected to benefit up to 20 lakh passengers daily by providing a faster and more accessible method of purchasing tickets.
Bhagalpur station, one of the busiest in the region, has already seen tangible improvements. Previously known for long queues at ticket counters, the station now operates three ATVMs, leading to a noticeable reduction in crowding. Plans are underway to increase this number to five, especially in anticipation of the surge in passenger numbers during the annual Shravani fair.
In addition to regular tickets, the machines also issue platform tickets and monthly passes, offering a comprehensive solution for commuters and easing pressure on station staff.
