Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert across all 38 districts of Bihar on Wednesday, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several parts of the state. Of the total districts, 12 have been placed under an orange alert while 26 districts are under a yellow alert.
Light rain was reported in the early hours in Patna, while cloudy conditions prevailed in districts such as Buxar, Supaul, and Nalanda. According to the IMD, districts under the orange alert may experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning strikes, strong winds, and the possibility of hailstorms in isolated locations. Wind speeds in these areas may reach up to 60 km per hour.
In districts under the yellow alert, light to moderate rainfall with thunder and gusty winds is expected during the day.
Adverse weather likely for next two days
The Meteorological Department said the unstable weather conditions are likely to continue for the next two days, with the most significant impact expected today and tomorrow. Several places may witness sudden heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds during this period.
Reason behind the sudden weather change
Meteorologists attribute the current weather pattern to multiple atmospheric factors. An active western disturbance over north India is influencing weather conditions across the region. At the same time, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are continuously moving towards Bihar.
The interaction of these systems has increased moisture levels and atmospheric instability over the state. In addition, a cyclonic circulation over the region is aiding rapid cloud formation and triggering thunderstorms and rainfall. These conditions are also increasing the chances of lightning strikes and isolated hailstorms.
Weather outlook for Patna
In the state capital, cloudy skies are expected to persist throughout the day with intermittent rainfall likely at intervals. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and lightning may also occur in parts of the city.
The weather pattern is expected to remain similar in Patna for the next one to two days. However, a slight drop in temperature may bring some relief from the prevailing heat.
Advisory for residents and farmers
The Meteorological Department has advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during severe weather conditions. People have been urged to stay away from open spaces, trees, and electric poles during lightning activity and take shelter in safe locations.
Farmers have been advised to harvest ready crops at the earliest and store them safely. Crops kept in open fields should be properly covered to minimize damage from rain or hail.
Weather updates from districts
Early morning weather updates from several districts indicate changing conditions across the state.
In Gopalganj, dark clouds have been hovering since morning, bringing some relief from the heat, and rainfall is likely during the day.
Jehanabad also witnessed cloudy skies and light rainfall early in the morning, accompanied by cool winds. Authorities have issued a lightning alert in the district.
Begusarai reported cloudy weather with light drizzle and cool winds since morning, while the IMD has issued a rainfall alert for the day.
In Madhubani, dense clouds covered the sky since morning with strong easterly winds blowing across the district. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22 degrees Celsius, and rainfall is expected later in the day.
