Begusarai: A 19-year-old college student was allegedly strangled to death by his girlfriend’s family after he was called to her house late at night in Bihar’s Begusarai district. The victim’s body was later dumped in a maize field about 500 metres away from his residence, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Vishal Kumar, son of Shambhu Sahni and a resident of Godhiyari village under the Bakhri police station area. Vishal was a graduation Part-II student and also attended a computer institute in Bakhri.

According to police, the incident came to light on Tuesday morning when villagers found the youth’s body lying in a field near Kamasthan Ara Mill and informed authorities. Police and a forensic team reached the spot and began an investigation. Rope marks were found on the victim’s neck, indicating strangulation.

Girl and father detained

Based on complaints from Vishal’s friends and preliminary findings, police have taken the girl and her father into custody for questioning. The girl’s brother, who is also suspected to be involved in the crime, is currently absconding.

DSP Nikhil Kumar said the Bakhri police station received information around 10 am on Tuesday about a body lying in the Salona Bahiyar area. “When the police team reached the spot, the body was identified as Vishal Kumar of Godhiyari village. Based on statements from the victim’s friends, the girl and her father have been detained and are being questioned,” he said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest all those involved.

Relationship began at computer institute

According to Vishal’s friend Rahul, the victim had enrolled in a computer institute in Bakhri after completing Class 12. A young woman who worked at the institute lived about one kilometre from Vishal’s house. The two began interacting during classes and soon exchanged phone numbers.

Their conversations later extended to long phone calls and chats on WhatsApp. However, the girl’s brother reportedly became suspicious and checked her phone, where he discovered messages indicating a relationship between the two.

Rahul said the brother then called Vishal and reprimanded both of them, advising them to focus on their studies. After the confrontation, the two stopped communicating for some time but later resumed contact through Snapchat.

Met in Samastipur before returning home

The girl was reportedly studying at a college in Samastipur while also working at the computer institute. According to the investigation so far, the two had planned to meet in Samastipur on Monday.

After spending some time together following her college classes, they returned to Begusarai by the same train in the evening. During this time, someone reportedly saw them together and informed the girl’s brother.

Later that night, the girl’s family allegedly asked her to call Vishal and ask him to come near their house. When the youth arrived, he was allegedly caught by family members and strangled with a rope.

Body found in field

Vishal’s father, Shambhu Sahni, said the family had dinner together around 10 pm on Monday before going to sleep. When they woke up on Tuesday morning, Vishal was not in his bed.

“I tried calling him several times but he did not answer. Initially, we thought he might have gone out for a walk. Later, we began searching for him and were informed by locals that a youth’s body had been found in a field near Kamasthan Ara Mill,” Sahni said.

When the family reached the spot, they found Vishal’s body lying in the field, with a rope lying nearby.

Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and later handed it over to the family. Further investigation into the case is underway.
