Patna: Air travel from Patna is set to become more expensive after leading carriers, including IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express, raised fuel surcharges in response to rising aviation fuel costs.
The move is expected to push up ticket prices across both domestic and international routes, affecting passengers travelling to and from the state capital.
Distance-based surcharge replaces flat rate
Airlines have shifted from a flat surcharge system to a distance-based structure. For domestic flights, the additional charge now ranges between Rs 299 and Rs 899 depending on the route.
On international sectors, the surcharge has been increased in dollar terms, with passengers expected to pay an additional $24 to $280.
Travellers flying from Patna to major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru are likely to see higher fares as a result.
Implementation timeline and conditions
The revised surcharge for domestic flights came into effect on April 8, while the international fare changes are set to apply from the night of April 9–10.
Air India said passengers who have already booked tickets will not be affected by the new surcharge unless they make changes to their travel plans.
Fuel price surge behind hike
Airlines attributed the increase to a sharp rise in global aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, which form a significant portion of operating costs.
Industry experts said continued volatility in fuel prices could lead to further fare increases, adding pressure on passengers, particularly frequent and emergency travellers.
Impact on travellers
The fare hike is expected to affect a wide range of passengers, from business travellers to those making urgent journeys, as airlines pass on rising input costs.
With fuel prices remaining uncertain, analysts said airfare trends in the coming months will largely depend on global energy markets and cost pressures faced by carriers.
