Patna: Bihar has successfully managed its highest-ever peak electricity demand of 9,350 MW, recorded at 8:28 pm on July 4, while maintaining uninterrupted power supply across the state, according to the Energy Department.

The state government said the milestone reflects sustained investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure, enhanced grid capacity and the adoption of modern technologies to support rising electricity consumption.

Demand Rises Across Sectors

The Energy Department said electricity demand has grown steadily across domestic, industrial, commercial and agricultural sectors. Officials attributed the increase to industrial expansion, urbanisation, higher commercial activity, wider use of electricity-powered irrigation systems and improved rural electrification.

The department added that better living standards in rural areas have also contributed to increased household electricity consumption. To keep pace with demand, Bihar has continued expanding and modernising its power infrastructure.

Peak Demand Has Increased Fivefold in a Decade

According to the department, Bihar’s peak electricity demand has risen sharply over the past decade. While the state’s peak demand stood at around 1,800 MW nearly ten years ago, it has now crossed 9,100 MW.

Officials said that peak demand, which was once recorded only once a year, is now being surpassed multiple times annually. Despite the higher load, the state’s electricity network has continued to operate without major disruptions.

Network Expansion Supports Reliable Supply

The Energy Department said the capacity of transmission lines, grid substations, power transformers and the distribution network has been strengthened across Bihar.

It added that advanced real-time monitoring, efficient load management and continuous technical supervision help maintain grid stability during periods of maximum demand, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers.

Round-the-Clock Monitoring and Consumer Support

Officials said the Energy Department and state power utilities maintain 24-hour monitoring of the power system to identify and address potential technical issues before they affect supply.

The department also said the 1912 electricity helpline and Fuse Call Centres remain operational round the clock to register consumer complaints and ensure timely resolution.

Government Highlights Infrastructure Improvements

Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar, also known as Bulo Mandal, said the increasing electricity demand reflects Bihar’s rapid and inclusive development.

He said the state government remains committed to providing uninterrupted and quality electricity to every consumer and congratulated employees of the Energy Department for achieving the record demand milestone.

Energy Secretary and Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL) Chairman-cum-Managing Director Ajay Yadav (IAS) said the transmission and distribution network is being continuously expanded and modernised to meet rising demand.

He said technology-driven grid management, improved system capacity and real-time monitoring have enabled Bihar to successfully handle successive record peak demands. He added that the state’s consumer grievance redressal mechanism has also been strengthened to deliver faster and more efficient services.
