Patna: Bihar has set a new record in electricity consumption after successfully meeting a peak power demand of 9,475 MW without major disruptions, the state Energy Department said on Thursday.
According to the department, the highest-ever demand was recorded at 9:50 pm on July 16, with uninterrupted electricity supplied to households, farms, industries, commercial establishments and essential services across the state.
New Record Surpasses Previous High
The latest peak demand exceeded Bihar’s previous record of 9,350 MW, which was registered at 8:28 pm on July 4.
Officials said the state has repeatedly broken its own electricity demand records in recent years, reflecting rising consumption across both urban and rural areas.
Demand Has Increased Fivefold In A Decade
The Energy Department said Bihar’s electricity demand has grown sharply over the past decade.
Around ten years ago, the state’s peak demand stood at approximately 1,800 MW. It has now crossed 9,400 MW, representing more than a fivefold increase.
Officials noted that peak demand, once recorded only occasionally, is now being exceeded several times each year as electricity access and consumption continue to expand.
Infrastructure Upgrade Credited
The department attributed the uninterrupted supply during the record demand period to sustained investments in power infrastructure.
According to officials, Bihar has strengthened its:
- Transmission lines
- Grid substations
- Power transformers
- Electricity distribution network
These upgrades have enabled the system to handle higher loads without major outages.
Real-Time Monitoring Helps Maintain Grid Stability
The Energy Department said advanced real-time monitoring systems, efficient load management and continuous technical supervision have helped maintain grid stability during periods of exceptionally high demand.
“This achievement reflects the strength of Bihar’s power infrastructure and our unwavering commitment to powering growth and delivering reliable electricity to every consumer,” an Energy Department official said.
Officials added that the state’s upgraded power network continues to support rising demand while ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply across Bihar.
