Patna: Active pre-monsoon conditions continued across Bihar on Sunday, with thunderstorms, rain and lightning affecting several districts as the India Meteorological Department warned of unstable weather over the coming days.
Rainfall was reported from Kishanganj on Sunday morning, while the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for rain in 19 districts and a red alert in nine districts across the state.
Red And Orange Alerts Issued
The IMD’s Patna centre warned of severe thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hailstorms and gusty winds in several districts.
Officials said weather conditions were expected to remain unstable over the next few hours and continue for at least five more days, until May 14.
According to the department, North Bihar is likely to remain particularly vulnerable to storms and lightning activity during this period.
The IMD attributed the changing weather pattern to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal along with cyclonic circulation over East Bihar and adjoining regions.
A western disturbance affecting the Himalayan belt is also expected to influence weather systems over eastern India on Sunday.
Wind Speeds Could Reach 70 Kmph
Late on Saturday evening, the Patna Meteorological Centre issued a red alert for districts including Gaya, Jamui, Jehanabad, Nawada, Banka, Munger, Lakhisarai and Sheikhpura.
The warning forecast thunderstorms accompanied by hail, lightning and wind speeds ranging between 60 and 70 kmph.

Heatwave Relief Likely
Meteorologists said easterly winds and continued cloud cover were likely to keep daytime temperatures under control, offering temporary relief from heatwave conditions.
On Saturday, Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 32.6C, while Bhabhua registered the state’s highest temperature at 38.7C.
Temperature drops were also recorded in districts including Motihari, Buxar, Kaimur, Jehanabad, Sheikhpura and Vaishali.
Officials advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning activity.
