Patna: The Bihar government has announced an increase in the incentive offered to citizens who assist road accident victims, raising the reward from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. The scheme, administered by the state Transport Department, aims to ensure timely medical treatment for those injured on the state’s roads.
Under the initiative, anyone who helps a person injured in a road accident and takes them to a hospital will now receive Rs 25,000. Officials hope that the higher reward will encourage more people to step forward without hesitation.
To expand awareness, the Transport Department has set up dedicated teams in every district. They will use posters, hoardings and other outreach methods to inform the public about the scheme.
In addition, the department has been conducting training sessions for drivers on safe driving practices. Over the past two days, more than 500 drivers—including auto-rickshaw operators—have received instruction on safe driving and assisting accident victims. Plans are also underway to extend the training to app-based taxi drivers working for services such as Ola and Uber.
During the sessions, authorities highlighted rising risks linked to mobile phone use, speeding, and failure to use helmets and seat belts. Drivers were advised to follow traffic rules, avoid driving while fatigued or unwell, and create awareness among fellow road users.
Transport Department Secretary Rajkumar emphasised the importance of immediate assistance, noting that drivers are often the first on the scene. “Many precious lives can be saved if immediate help is provided,” he said, adding that district-level teams have been formed to ensure effective implementation and promotion of the scheme.
