Patna: The Centre has approved a new railway line connecting Karpurigram and Bhagwanpur via Tajpur and Mahua in Bihar’s Samastipur district, a project expected to transform the region’s transport network and boost economic activity.
The proposed railway corridor will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,692 crore. The construction responsibility has been assigned to the Samastipur Railway Division.
Officials believe the project will significantly improve connectivity across the district while creating new opportunities for trade, agriculture and local businesses.
Tajpur Expected to Benefit Most
The railway line is expected to play a key role in developing Tajpur as a major business centre in north Bihar.
According to project plans, the rail route will pass through the vegetable market area at Motipur in Tajpur. A railway station is also proposed near the market, allowing traders and farmers easier access to rail transport.
The improved connectivity is expected to reduce transportation costs and help agricultural produce reach markets in Patna and other cities more efficiently.
Farmers to Gain Better Market Access
Local farmers are likely to be among the biggest beneficiaries of the project.
With direct rail connectivity, vegetables and other farm products can be transported faster to larger markets. Officials say the move could strengthen agricultural trade and improve income opportunities for growers in the region.
The project is also expected to support the expansion of wholesale trading activities around the Tajpur market area.
Survey Completed, Cost May Increase
Preparatory work for the railway line has already been completed.
A 15-member team from Elite Consultants, Roorkee, carried out a detailed survey of the proposed route between Karpurigram and Bhagwanpur in 2021. The survey reportedly took nearly a year to complete.
While the current project estimate stands at Rs 1,692 crore, officials indicated that the final cost could rise depending on future requirements and construction conditions.
No Railway Crossings Planned
The proposed corridor will not have traditional railway level crossings.
Instead, authorities plan to construct around 51 subways at different locations along the route to ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
A road overbridge is also proposed near the Tajpur vegetable market to facilitate safer movement across National Highway 28.
Seven Major Bridges, Six Stations Proposed
The railway project includes the construction of seven major bridges along the route.
Six stations have been proposed at Karpurigram, Tajpur, Bhagwanpur, Sultanpur Haq Harihar, Mukandpur and Mahua Jalalpur. Additional halt stations are also planned to improve local accessibility.
Railway officials say the project will strengthen regional connectivity and support long-term economic growth in Samastipur and adjoining areas.
