Patna: The Bihar government has issued strict directives to officials over persistent delays in the auction of sand ghats, warning of potential disruptions to supply and losses to state revenue.
The Department of Mines and Geology said the auction process for several riverbank sites remains incomplete across districts, prompting concern at senior levels. Officials have now been instructed to expedite pending auctions and secure all necessary statutory approvals without further delay.
According to departmental data, out of 463 identified “yellow sand” ghats in the state, auctions have been completed for 306 sites, while work orders have been issued for 180. Despite this progress, authorities said the overall pace has fallen short of expectations in multiple districts.
A district-wise review shows the highest number of pending auctions in Aurangabad, where 57 ghats are yet to be auctioned. Other districts with significant delays include Gaya (20), Jehanabad (12), Patna and Nawada (11 each), Bhojpur (10), Rohtas and Nalanda (8 each), Jamui (7), Lakhisarai and Bhagalpur (5 each), and Arwal (3).
Departmental sources said repeated instructions had previously been issued to speed up the process, but with limited results. Officials have now been warned that accountability will be fixed if delays persist. They have been directed to work closely with district collectors to invite tenders promptly and ensure transparency in the auction process.
Authorities say timely completion of auctions is essential not only to boost state revenues but also to prevent shortages of sand, a key material for construction activity across Bihar.
