Patna: Schools across Bihar have been ordered to suspend classes as the state grapples with a severe cold wave, the Education Department announced on Sunday. Closures vary by district, with different dates and timings in place for students of different grades.
In Patna, schools will remain closed for students below eighth grade until December 30. Classes for higher grades have been rescheduled to run from 10:00am to 3:30pm.
Gopalganj district has ordered all government and private schools to halt academic activities from December 29 to 31. Students in grades nine and above will attend classes between 10:00am and 4:30pm. Pre-board and board examinations, as well as related special classes, are exempt, said Acting District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Vivek.
In Chhapra, the District Magistrate of Saran, Vaibhav Srivastava, confirmed that schools, including Anganwadi centres, will remain closed until December 31 for students up to ninth grade. Classes for grades ten and above will take place from 10:00am to 4:30pm.
Motihari’s private and government schools, along with coaching institutes, will remain closed until January 1, while Sitamarhi and Jehanabad districts will keep schools shuttered until December 31.
The Bihar Meteorological Department has issued a cold day alert for the state, warning of persistent low temperatures due to westerly winds. On Sunday, maximum temperatures across Bihar ranged between 13°C and 18°C.
